KP is excited to announce its new Director of Children’s Ministry, Alexia Lang. She will be taking over for Judy Hamner who is moving into an administrative role in the church. Alexia and her husband Nathan have been attending Kaw Prairie for about a year and have been involved in the communications team, the Communion team, the Worship team and the Christmas play. They have an adorable baby boy named Aiden and a second child due in August. Alexia takes on her new role with lots of experience, and we’re confident that she’s going to do a great job.
Tell us a little about your background, Alexia.
I have about five years experience working in the education field, mainly in early childhood education. My experience comes from teaching for Johnson County Community College, Catholic Charities, Jumpstart and Operation Breakthrough.
In addition, while I was born into a family of ministers, I spent 10 years actively serving in the ministry. During that time, I served in children's, youth and adult ministries. I have always had a passion for children's ministry.
Proverbs says that we should train up our children in the way that they should go and then when they are old, they will not depart from it. Children's ministry has an important calling to work with parents to prepare children for the way they will live the rest of their lives.
How did you come to know Jesus Christ?
Unlike so many people, I can't tell you the day I came to know Jesus. For as long as I can remember, I have felt like a child of God. I can say that I had an experience with God at church camp at the age of 13. On that warm day in the Rocky Mountains, I pledged to devote the rest of my life to serving.
What are you most excited about at KP?
I am super excited to be part of the mission to change lives with Jesus' love. I can't wait to get to know all of our great kids and to work with parents and teachers to provide a loving, nurturing and exciting environment for KP's children to learn and grow in Christ.
Who has most influenced you in your faith?
Without a doubt, my grandparents most influenced me in my faith. They were the devoted pastors of a small church in southern Kansas. They spent their lives changing the lives and hearts of others with love and compassion. No matter the adversity that came their way, they pressed on. Their road was hard, their journey was long, but they now stand upon that mountain of God.
If you could spend a whole day with an historic person, who would it be?
I don't know how historic he is, but C.S. Lewis. I loved the Chronicles of Narnia when I was young. But when I discovered Lewis' theological books, I knew the man was a genius. I don't feel like my year is complete unless I have had the chance to reread “Mere Christianity” and “The Great Divorce.”
