The Kansas City Rescue Mission is a Christ-centered community offering freedom and hope to the poor and homeless, empowering them to reach their full potential.  Founded in 1950 in, KCRM has provided good food, safe shelter, a recovery program and job and life-skills training to hundreds of people each year.

Ron and Debby Atkinson coordinate a group of Kaw Prairier's that serve lunch at the KCRM on the third Sunday of each month and join the KCRM staff and residents for game night the following Saturday.  Everyone is welcome to participate in this on-going outreach activity.  Simply email Debby for more information.

All Church Serve Days

There might be a chill in the air, but the hearts at Kaw Prairie Community Church in Lenexa are warm.

Kaw Prairie holds an annual All Church Serve Day in an effort to reach out to those in need in the Kansas City Metro.

Last year, approximately 200 volunteers dressed in their grubbies, grabbed a sack lunch packed by church’s little ones and headed out to several locations across town.

A few dozen volunteers went to three homes in the Ivanhoe Neighborhood in Kansas City, Mo., and painted, put up trim and siding and stained a deck. The elderly men and women living in the homes expressed their gratitude for the help because they were unable to do the work themselves.

Another large group of Kaw Prairians helped out at Metro Lutheran Ministry stocking the food pantry, packing boxes of blankets for the Christmas Store and putting together Thanksgiving meal bags.

Families with younger kids weren’t left out of the day’s fun. They stayed behind at the church and did some sprucing up.

All-in-all, the members of the congregation spent the day with smiles on their faces and made a big impact on the community.

Joplin Relief

Joplin, MO was hit by a massive F5 tornado on May 22, 2011.  According to Joplin's emergency manager, about 20% of Joplin was destroyed, with roughly 2,000 buildings destroyed.  According to the National Weather Service, emergency managers reported damage to 75% of Joplin.  Relief efforts have been in force since May and will continue for months to come.

A group of 20 Kaw Prairie adults and students traveled to Joplin to assist with clean-up and rebuilding efforts.  We worked with ReliefSpark, a relief organization comprised solely of volunteers on site in Joplin.  The trip was very short, but we were able to assist 3 families with rebuling efforts.

We are hoping to take more trips to Joplin in 2012 to continue to help this community.  If you are interested in being part of an outreach team in this way, email Judy.
