Rock Bottom: Promise

Yesterday we began a new sermon series “Rock Bottom: What’s actually there when everything else falls away?”. Over the next eight weeks we will encounter different scriptures where we witness someone’s rock bottom. This isn’t always the rock bottom we initially think of – the lowest of lows – but can also be simply getting to the core and what matters most, who we are, what is our foundation - a proverbial rock bottom.

To begin this series, we first encountered Jacob’s rock bottom. Jacob was the younger twin son of Isaac, who was the son of Abraham, and not privy to the majority of the inheritance from his aging father. After scheming his father to inherit his brother’s (Esau) inheritance, Esau sought revenge on Jacob. While Jacob was on the run to flee Esau’s murderous rage, he spent the night out on an open road completely alone, unprotected, and cut off from the meaningful relationships in his life. On this night he dreamt of a staircase connecting Heaven and Earth with God’s messengers traversing this staircase. God descended to speak directly to Jacob extending the promise he made to his grandfather, Abraham. God again promises this land to him and his descendants and to be with him on his journey and to bring him back to this land with his family. Jacob later returns with family, flocks, and herds praising God’s faithfulness. He prayed to be reunited with his brother, who welcomed his back home.

Jacob’s rock bottom came at a time he was isolated from his mother and brother after his father’s death. Fleeing for his life, he was cast away alone and afraid. God met him where he was, promised a covenant initially made to his grandfather, and stood by his side until Jacob returned years later. God’s steadfastness shines a light in times of darkness and gives up hope to continue on our paths.
