Navigating the Road: No Passing Zone

We are so grateful to have heard from Rev Sally Wright this past Sunday. To wrap up this sermon series, “Navigating the Road,” we heard about a discussion James and John had with Jesus and how other disciples reacted to it in Mark 10:35-45.

Even though James and John worked closely with Jesus, like all the disciples did, they sought out Jesus to give them special recognition. They wanted to feel like they mattered, like their life’s work was making a difference; however, this also pitted them against each other and the other disciples in a game of comparison. Jesus quickly casts their request aside and illustrates that they are not here to be hierarchical: They drink from the same cup, are baptized in the same manner. It was not even up to Jesus how each disciple was to be received in Heaven.

We can strive to show up for one another, to encourage each other, without taking away glory from anyone. In life, Jesus is here with us to show us love and humility in service toward each other. This No Passing Lane from Jesus reminds us to value community over comparison and serving others over being served.
