Alongside: Serving our Neighbors in the Love and Way of Jesus - Watchful Eyes

This week we began our new series, Serving Alongside Our Neighbors, where we are focusing on our value of being a purposeful presence in our community. Looking to Philippians 2:1-11, we reflected on Paul’s invitation to “watch out for what is better for others,” as we adopt that “the attitude that was in Christ Jesus,” who emptied himself to come alongside us. Drawing on Duane Elmer’s Cross-Cultural Servanthood, we considered how humility opens the ground for transformation in us, in our neighbors, and in our community. We heard how that humility shaped a decades-long partnership between Pastor Clare’s home church and a village in El Salvador, where listening and presence were foundational. It’s the same spirit we hope to bring to our partnerships here, remembering that Christ is already at work in our neighbors and that we have as much to learn as we have to offer.

Over the next three weeks we’ll continue cultivating listening ears, willing hands, and a heart that seeks the welfare of our community. We hope you’ll join us for learning and service opportunities with Center of Grace during Afterwords, and for worship on November 15, when we welcome the principal of our newest partner, Starside Elementary.

Here are links to things Pastor Clare referenced in her sermon on Sunday, if you would like to dig deeper this week.
